MasterSuna SBS – even sands containing high fines and swelling clay can now be used for concrete production
How does MasterSuna SBS work?
MasterSuna SBS is a new concrete admixture from BASF that facilitates the utilization of sand grades which were previously unsuitable to produce everyday concrete. Without this admixture, the use of challenging and unsatisfactory sands can cause problems: Clay mineral and high content of fines in crushed sand increase the water demand of the concrete due to its large surface area. In addition, the large inner surface area of the clay absorbs large quantity of conventional superplasticizers. Thus, even with high superplasticizer dosage, it is not possible to obtain stable, reliable concrete consistencies. To date, the use of such sands in concrete has been very limited.
What makes MasterSuna SBS unique?
With MasterSuna SBS in combination with other water-reducing admixtures such as MasterGlenium, it is now possible to produce everyday concrete with sands containing high fines or swelling clays in accordance with EN 12620 and respective regulations. Challenging and unsatisfactory local sand deposits and low-cost crushed sand can now be used. Costly washing or other pre-treatment of the local sand can be reduced. The transport of more suitable sand from other locations is no longer necessary. The result is a significant cost saving.
More value for your sand
MasterSuna SBS also offers benefits for sandpit owners. Critical sands which could previously only be used in low-value applications, if at all, can now be used in concrete production. As a result, existing sand deposits can be utilized to a greater extent and the value of the sandpit is increased. At the same time, fewer new sandpits need to be developed, which leads to a positive contribution to landscape and environmental protection.
